A. Obtain a Social Security Number (SSN)
To obtain an SSN, wait at least 10 business days after international travel, and then visit your nearest Social Security office with the following materials:-
1. Letter from your employer, on employer's headed paper, verifying your employment
A template letter, together with instructions, can be found here:
http://www.sfsu.edu/~oip/handoutsforms.htm, under “Sample Employer's Letter for Social Security Administration”.
2. Letter, completed by an International Student Advisor, stating that you have been authorized to work on campus
To obtain this letter, visit the Office of International Programs (OIP) - located in the Administration Building, room 458A, 4th floor - and ask to see an advisor. You will need a letter from your employer (see step 1) and your passport, I-94 card, and I-20 form.
3. Completed application for a Social Security Card (Form SS-5)
Application forms are available at Social Security Administration offices or at
www.socialsecurity.gov/online/ss-5.pdf
4. Passport
5. I-94 card (Arrival/Departure Record)
6. I-20 (for F-1 students) or DS-2019 (for J-1 students)
To obtain your Social Security Number quickly (without waiting a few weeks for your Social Security card to arrive by mail), ask for a temporary printout of the number whilst at the Social Security Office a day or two after your visit. You will now be able to begin working.
Keep your Social Security card in a safe place and only carry it with you when absolutely necessary. Do not allow others to use your Social Security Number. This number assigned to you is valid for your lifetime.

B. Obtain authorization to work on campus
Obtain an OIP On-Campus Referral Form from the Financial Aid Office in the Student One Stop building, complete (you will need your passport and I-90 form), and hand in to the OIP. The form will take 24 hours to process.
Take the completed form to the Financial Aid Office back to the Financial Aid Office. They will exchange your Referral Form for an EEV (Electronic Employment Verification) form.
Take the EEV to the office in your department that deals with employee payments.
C. Receive tax status
With all above documents, visit the Internal Audit Office - located in the Administration Building, room 258 (second floor) - and ask to speak to, or book an appointment with, the tax specialist regarding non-alien tax status for on-campus employment. You will then be required to complete a further form with the specialist.
You are strongly advised to take a tax workshop offered by the OIP as filling out a tax form unadvised is near impossible. See
here for a list of upcoming OIP events, including tax workshops.
D. Complete the employment paperwork provided by your department
Keep all of the above documents at hand to complete this paperwork.

Important note: For GA and GTA positions, you must be enrolled as a full-time student (ie. you are taking more than 6 units). However, in your final semester, you may file a Reduced Course Load form (available for download from the OIP website). This form enables you to be a part time student and to be employed on campus. You can only, though, use this form once.
