Where BECA graduate students & alumni make media

Dear BECA friends--

As many of you know, Access SF is having its budget cut such that it will no longer exist as of June 2009. This will not only apply in San Francisco, but everywhere. Because of shifts in cable franchise agreements, municipalities will no longer have the authority and obligation to sustain their public access channels and to determine their own broadcast content according to the needs of their communities. As one casualty of these changes, Public access television will no longer exist. This sucks for a LOT of reasons--mainly, that this will leave students WITHOUT a platform to distribute their work. It also totally undermines the concept of democratic media and free access to media platforms.

For more information, check out my interview with Sup. Ross Mirkarimi, who is spearheading legislation to reform the PEG funding process that will allow Access SF to stay afloat.

PLEASE, if you are free on Wed. April 29 at 11 AM, show up to this public hearing on the matter and have your voice heard:

PEG Funding Hearing, Board of Supervisors

SUBJECT: Please Support the Ordinance to Reform PEG Funding

Dear Supervisor,

I am very concerned to hear that as of June 2009, funding to support public access television will be eliminated, thereby eliminating a crucial platform for students and for the general public. As your constituent, I strongly urge support your colleague Sup. Mirkarimi's ordinance to reform PEG funding. It is imperative that we maintain this platform, not only for the students and community voices who rely on it, but for our democracy as a whole.

Sincerely,

YOU.

Hey Annie, thanks for promoting this cause. (I really like the big sign on your writing lab door too.) This really is a critical issue and so we should all at least email the above people to show our support for public access. I'm doing it and so should you.
